DIY Candy Cane T-Shirts

Lou has Christmas Spirit Week at School starting today! It was “Dress like a Candy Cane: wear red and white” for the first day. We decided this would be a great time to experiment with the spray paint T-shirt technique we had been trying out.

Making a Candy Cane T-Shirts

What You Will Need:

  • T-shirt (white)

  • Spray paint (we used red)

  • Newspaper to protect your work area (would advise doing it outside or a well-ventilated area because of fumes)

  • A sheet of cardboard for inside the shirt (we used a box so we could see the sides better)

First, take the tape and place them in angled straight lines

across the T-shirt to form the candy cane pattern.

Put the cardboard inside. (If you are only lightly coating the shirt, you can skip this step.) Lightly spray the front of the shirt. Then allow to dry for about an hour and repeat the entire process, tape, spray dry, on the back of the shirt.

Once the shirt is dry to the touch, the tape can be removed,

or it can stay on until it has completely dried for 24 hours.

After it has completely dried, you can wash it like normal. I like to wash it either by itself or with towels just in case it fades (even though we hadn’t had it fade onto other clothes unless we had not waited for the full 24-hours to wash it)!

We think these shirts turned out super cute!

They couldn’t wait to show them to their class today!
